Book before the first storm
Plowing is MDK's main winter service. Any plow route can only clear so many stops in a storm, so contract customers are set on the route before the first flake falls. A call that comes in during a storm depends on whether there is room left.
Signing up in the fall leaves time to settle where the snow goes and mark the edges of the drive before the first storm hits. It also leaves time to agree on the contract and the details, instead of sorting it out while standing in a foot of snow at the end of the driveway.
Two ways to sign up
Residential
Driveways, front walks, and steps for homeowners. The goal is simple: the car can get out in the morning and nobody slips on the way to the door. A driveway should be cleared to its full width, not just a single lane down the middle.
Commercial
Parking lots, entrances, and sidewalks for businesses, offices, and property managers. Commercial accounts are about keeping the property open and the walking surfaces safe for customers and staff. More detail is on the commercial page.
Getting the driveway ready for the season
Paver driveways. A paver driveway can be plowed like any other, but the blade needs to ride slightly high or use a softer cutting edge so it does not catch paver edges. Heavy use of rock salt can also wear the surface of pavers and burn the plants along the drive, so the ice treatment should suit the surface.
Where the snow gets piled. Before the season starts, the spot for the snow pile should be settled with the homeowner: away from the walk, off the lawn edge where it would kill grass, and never on top of shrubs or blocking the view at the end of the driveway. Pavers and plantings next to the drive should be marked so the plow does not catch them.
Contracts and trigger depth. The trigger is the amount of snow that sets off a visit. Below the trigger, the crew does not come out. At or above it, the property gets plowed. The trigger, the areas covered, and the price are all set in the contract before the season starts, so there are no surprises once the snow comes. Pricing depends on driveway length, grade, and what else gets cleared.
The same company, every season
